FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY IN YOUR HOME LANGUAGE

Belingual language clubs are clubs lead by volunteer parents where families with under school-aged children, who speak the same language as one of your home languages come together to play, sing, craft and have fun.  The clubs support children's language and identity development and give families an opportunity to experience their language and culture in a community.

Information about the club venue:

The Club is run by our volunteers Rebecca and Laura.  All our Belingual Club activities are designed for children between the ages of 2 to 6 years, but the whole family is welcome to join.

The clubs are meant for all families who use English as a home language. This means that adults and children may have different levels of language capacity, the club is a safe space for all families to learn together with different types of activities.

Belingual activities are pedagogically designed to support your children’s language and identity development, but most of all we hope that children (and parents) will have fun, feel they are part of a community and form a positive relationship with their home language and culture.

Parents play an important role in clubs. We hope that you will encourage and help both your children and the other children to attend. Get involved, sing, dance and have fun with your children! Please also remember that our clubs are run by volunteers (who are often parents themselves, they are not early years educators) and they will always be happy to get a helping hand during the club. The more involved parents are in the club, but more fun and engaging it will be for the whole family!

Communication:
Communication related to the club will mainly be through the club’s WhatsApp Group, which you will be sent a link to once you have registered.

A few things to remember:
  • Children must always attend with a parent/guardian who are responsible for the child’s participation and safety during the club.
  • CANCELLATIONS: If you cannot attend, please let the volunteers know via WhatsApp group.
  • Please bring a small snack for your child, we will have a short snack break.

WHAT IS A BELINGUAL LANGUAGE CLUB?

Picture
Belingual language clubs are clubs lead by volunteer parents where families with under school-aged children, who speak the same language as one of your home languages come together to play, sing, craft and have fun.  The clubs support children's language and identity development and give families an opportunity to experience their language and culture in a community.

The clubs meet every two week for two hours.

Who can take part in the clubs: All multilingual families who have under-school-aged children and want to support their children's language and identity development and get to know other families that speak the same language. The club activities are design for children aged 2-6 but the whole family is welcome and we hope the clubs will be a meeting place where families can also get to know each other.

The fluency or level of language use of children and parents doesn't matter, as long as the family use the club language or want to strengthen the families relationship with the language and culture. Parents who do not speak the language of the club are also welcome to join and learn with their children. We will meet and support each other where we are and learn together.

Belingual ONLINE ClubS -  Creating NEW Spaces for families!

Picture
Children learn language in community. It is so important for young children's motivation to use their home language that they see and hear other adults and children using their language, that they see it as something useful and that they feel they are not along with thier language. There are multilingual families living all over Finland, in places where there are no other families speaking the same language. It is difficult for them to find their own language community to meet face-to-face.

With our Belingual Online clubs we want to help families connect with other families living in Finland who speak the same language.  We will be testing our approach the fall (2023).

WHAT IS A Belingual Online CLUB?

The clubs will meet online every two to four weeks for about  45mins. Each club session with have some structured activites, with three different types of club activities to alternate:

  1. Storyime: Select a book to read together followed by a fun craft or game related to the topic to help learn some new words and sentances.
  2. Music time: Actvities based on rythem, music and dance
  3. Play time: Game based activities that the whole group can do together

Clubs are free to join and they are led by volunteers. Our online clubs are not language schools, any children are not taught langauge, but we hope to create a space where children can hear and experience their langauge and culture together and build a warm, postive relationship with their home language that motivates them us use thier language in other parts of their daily life.

Volunteer to run a new Belingaul Online CluB

Help us create a space for families where they can virtually meet other families who speak the same language!

We are looking for volunteers who speak a minority language and are interested in testing with us our new virtual club model for families with children under school age.
You don't need previous experience, just a willingness to learn new things and help your language community. You will participate in a training workshop (remotely) and commit to facilitating at least 30 -45 minute virtual club meetings.

We will organise an online traning workshop for interested volunteers, so if you are interested, please get in touch with our specialist Laura Hytti:
