Let's color

Activity type: crafting, coloring activity
Materials: toilet paper rolls, colored pen
Age group: 2-6
Time: 15 mins

Activity description:

  • Give each child one paper cup or toilet paper role and tell them which color to color it. Parents can help with younger children.  
  • Give each child a coloring sheet to continue coloring with once they have colored their cup/toilet paper roll.  
  • Place colors red, blue, green, yellow and orange in the middle 
  • Instruct children to color the pictures in the colors they want, however that they must always ask for the color they want.  
  • Do a practice round: 
  1. ASK - What color do you want? 
  2. CAN I HAVE Yellow?  ​​
  • MODEL THIS BEHAVIOUR A FEW TIMES and then let children color in their own time, parents should encourage children to change color and ASK the other children for the color they want.  
  • Put some music on in the background while children color. 
FOR YOUNGER KIDS:  Encourage parents to actively repeat the colors to their child. You may want to break the group up into a few smaller groups for this activity.  
  • When everyone is done coloring, ask children to bring the cup/toilet paper roll to the front and hang up their coloring work together. 
  • Tidy the space together.

Inspired by a book or cartoon

Age group: 2-6
Time: 30 mins

Activity description: 
  • Welcome everyone and instruct all parents and children get name tags 
  • Safety Walk 
  • Roll call and Rules  
  • Give parents instructions on how to take part in activities with their kids. 
  • Today the words of the will come from the book, or the cartoon chosen. You can prepare some picture cards beforehand or just use the book/video for the words. 
Today’s activities are based on ​2 books or an educational tv-series/cartoon. You can ask the children to vote for or choose the book or tv-series in the previous club. Make sure however that it is suitable and educational. You can pre-select suitable options with parents and let children vote.  Set out a cozy space for the children to sit or lay down. You can even dim the lights, if you plan to read a book put on some calm music, it should be a calm relaxing environment (it is ok if some kids (or parents 😉) fall asleep.  

  • If reading books, see our tips for reading a book to a group. 
  • If you want, you can print out coloring sheet with the characters of the educational cartoon you have chosen.  
  • If there is a theme song, put that on and sing and dance together. 
  • After watching you can let children come up with games or play inspired by what you have read or watch. The rest of the club is free play time.

Room of the house quiz

Activity description: 
  • Divide children into teams if possible. If not, they can be one team, or play individually.  
  • Give each team a piece of paper and pen and tell them to write the numbers 1 – 9 on the piece or paper. 
  • Read out the following questions. Act out the movement. You can also show the relevant action with a routine picture card.  
  1. Where do you brush your teeth? (bathroom) 
  2. Where do you cook food? (kitchen) 
  3. Where you sleep at night? (bedroom) 
  4. Where do you eat dinner? (dining room) 
  5. Where does your family relax together? (living room) 
  6. Where do you wash yourself/your body? (bathroom) 
  •  Go through the answers together. You can point out the rooms on the drawing of the house.  
  • If there are differences between where these things are done in Finland and your other country (for example if food is cooked outside), talk about it with the children.  You can also add.  
  • questions that are specific to your culture here if you want 

FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN  
Do the activity in the same way but ask the following questions and ask the children to come and point out on the picture of the house. Then all say the name of the room together.  
  1. Where do you brush your teeth? (bathroom) 
  2. Where do we cook food? (kitchen) Where you sleep at night? (bedroom) 
  3. Where do you eat dinner? (dining room) 
  4. Where are your books, toys, and games (bedroom)

Ordering daily routines

Activity description:
 

FOR SMALLER KIDS 

  • On 4 of the boxes, stick one of the morning, afternoon, evening and night flashcards on the outside of each and place in different corners the room 
  • In the 5th box, put different objects like small balls, blocks etc.. and put the box in the middle of the room.  
  • Model the activity: hold up one of the flashcards (e.g. "eat breakfast") – say the word and pick up an object from the object box and point to the 4 boxes around the room. Ask "Which one?" and then go and drop the object into the morning box.  Say "morning" as you drop the object into the box. 
  • Now let's start the game. Hold up a flashcard (any from the daily routines set) and shout out the verb (e.g. eat dinner). Get each child to come over pick up an object and drop it on the correct box. The other children can be encouraged to help.  Encourage the children to say the time of the day word when they drop the object into the box.  
  • GO through all the picture cards. You can either do this slowly or do it really fast and get all the kids to pick up an object for each card to get everyone moving.  
​FOR OLDER KIDS:  

  • Give the children a routine card print-out and a pair of scissors to cut out the routine images. 
  • Ask them to put them in the order that they do them during the day.  
  • On the wall tape the “daily time” card (morning, day, evening, night).  
  • Now say the words for the different routines in a logical order and ask children to come and stick their routine cards in the right place.  
If you have a big group -
​you can
let the children work in teams. Let then work out together what order the cards should go in. Encourage them to put words to their actions. When they decide where one card goes, ask them to tell the group what the card is and what time of the day it belongs to. You can also just do this exercise on the floor without sticking the picture up.

The tree of positivity

Activity type: Crafting (can be an addition to positive hands activity)
Materials: color papers, pencil or pen, scissors
Age group: 2-6
Time: 50 mins

Activity description: 
  • Give each child/parent duo a branch 
  • Ask the children: Do you know what a branch is and where a branch belongs? 
  • Tell the children that the branch can look like anything and be any color 
  • Let the children color/paint the branch and for older children they can also cut the branch into a different shape 
  • PARENTS: Encourage your children, tell them they are doing a great job!! 
  • When the children are ready, as them what they thought was fun about the exercise and what they like about their group? You can help the children again by repeating the positive words and asking if the group is happy? Friendly? Etc… 
  • Write the positive things about the group onto the branches 
  • Help the children attach the branches to the tree trunk on the wall (with masking tape) - Discuss how different all the branches are but how they are all part of the same tree. 
  • Stick on the POSITIVE HANDS as LEAVES

Positive Hands

Activity description: 
  • Each child gets a piece of cardboard. Explain to the children that we will start drawing our hands. You can demonstrate how this is done. 
  • Parents can help children trace their hands. Some children might find this uncomfortable, if they do, don’t force them, you can draw a hand together, or trace a parent’s hands instead. 
  • Whilst you are drawing encourage the children to think about positive words about themselves.  

FOR YOUNGER KIDS: Younger kids may not stay engaged for that long, you can give them paints to paint the hands whilst you do the rest of the exercise, still ask you children about positive words to describe them, make suggestions, but let them paint as we go along. 

  • Whilst you are drawing encourage the children to think about positive words about themselves.  
  • Parents can think this through with their children and decide together what words to write on the fingers of the hand. 
  • Smaller children can be given a hand to paint and parents can write on another one. 
  • Once the words are written on the hands, it’s time to cut them out. Parents can do this. Let the children paint whilst you cut out the hands. 
  • Once the hands are cut, all the parents and children can help clear up the paints and the workspace. 
  • Parents can take the children to wash their hands whilst another parent finishes cleaning up the space.

Let's go fly a kite

Activity description: 
​
Today we will make a kite. Choose which kite your will make with the kids and make a sample kite at home to show as an example.  Start by explaining that today we will make a kite that we can fly together. It might be a bit hard and require patience and concentration, but the adults are here to help, we can all help each other and together we will get it done!  
Put some music on the background and get each parent – child pair to pick up their supplies and then find a space to sit at a table.  
Older kids kite:
  • Cut out the shape of the kite as show on the right. You can use cloth, newspaper or even a plastic bag.  
  • Place the straws onto the kite as shown and tape them on.  
  • Put some tape on the corners and make holes, where shown in the picture. Taping prevents the holes from tearing. 
  • ​Cut two pieces of sting, tie them through the holes on the sides and tie the strings together with a knot. 
  • Cut a piece of the string (at least 65 cm). The length of the sting will be dependent on the size of the kite, the bigger the kite, the longer the string. Tie the long string to the central know.  

Kite options for younger kids:
Younger children may not be able to concentrate for as long. These kite options are more suitable for younger kids. Start with a song about flying a kite if you can find one in your language.  

  • Optional: You can start by letting your child decorate an A4 paper with pens and crayons. Encourage them to draw feathers in different colors 
  • Fold A4 paper in half 
  • Fold the top corners to the sides and staple the corners to the fold.
  • Cut out a tringle out of a different colored paper and some feathers for the tail (you may want to cut these in advance if the children are very young). Glue on the beak and tail feather. Draw on the birds’ eyes.  
  • With a hole punch, make a hole just above the fold and tie the long string to the hole  

Japanese fish kite:
You can either use the pre-printed “fish-head” or you can just use colored pieces of paper that you can cut out and get children and parents to draw the fish face on.  
  • Cut out the fish head and draw on some eyes and a mouth. 
  • Cut out around 16 small (approx. 2,5 cm) pieces of crepe paper scales in each color. Crepe paper is best because it is light, but you can also use normal paper.  
  • Next only glue the edges of the two blank sides of the fish together. Make sure the middle is not glued to allow air to go through the fish’s mouth (put a pencil in between two papers whilst they dry)
  • whilst the glue dries - sing a song about a kite or fishes together 😊  
  • Glue the colored crepe paper scales on the side of the fish in alternating colors to create an awesome looking fish.  
  • Whilst the children are coloring the face, parents can cut out the crepe paper for the fish tail. Cut about 5 long pieces in different lengths and let you child clue them on.  
  • Punch a hole in the fish’s mouth.  
  • Get 2 pieces of string or yarn and tie them through hole. Tape the string to the wooden stick.
