Experts by Experience

Familia’s volunteer experts by experience promote the well-being of intercultural families by participating in various trainings, seminars and workshops, or in collaboration with the media. Our experts by experience can also tell their stories, for example, in peer meetings and groups.

This spring, we are organising our first Expert by Experience training in cooperation with Kaapatut lapset ry and Amal ry. The training includes in-person teaching days (Saturday 19 March and Sunday 20 March, and Saturday 9 April) and online training as well as preliminary and intermediate tasks, and small group work online. The training is in Finnish, but you can ask questions in English and use English in your personal training related assignments. Read more about training on this page. You can also get more information about training and being an Expert by Experience from Hanna Kinnunen.

Content

During the training, you will learn to tell your own story in a way that suits different situations. Attention is paid to giving interviews as well as talking in seminars and in small groups.  In addition, you will learn skills that are important to an expert by experience, such as presentation skills and working with the media. You will also get to hear the experiences of trained experts by experience.

Who can become an expert by experience?

An expert by experience has understanding and wisdom born of life experiences, and a desire to share their experience in different roles. The experience can be related to a challenging life situation, crisis, disability, illness, or a personal problem / problem of someone close to you.

The expert by experience also has knowledge of what has helped him or her best and what are the factors that have influenced living with the challenging situation and recovering from it.

Previous work or other experience related to the topic may help with the assignment, but is not required. Personal experience as well as an enthusiasm to give time to support others and be involved in influencing is all that is required.

What do the experts by experience do?

Familia's experts by experience have first-hand experience of, for example, intercultural divorce and parenting after separation, intercultural blended family, or some other special issue related to intercultural families - and a desire to use their experience to support and help others.

As an expert by experience, you will promote the well-being of intercultural families by sharing your experience in peer groups, trainings, seminars or in collaboration with the media.

What does one get by being an expert by experience?

You will get the necessary training, orientation and support for your tasks as an expert by experience, and be able to exchange ideas with others. The expenses  directly related to working as an expert by experience will be reimbursed to you. Depending on the assignment, you may sometimes also receive a small payment.

As an expert by experience, you get to influence and raise awareness based on your own experience. This is how you are involved in helping people and families who share the same experience. You will also receive a certificate and useful experience from the training.
