As of 2024, according to Statistics Finland, there were approximately 180,079 intercultural families in the country. Of these, 90,449 are families where one of the parents was born in Finland and the other abroad. In addition, there are about 89,630 families where both parents were born abroad, whether in the same country or in different ones.
Between 1992 and 2024, Finland experienced a remarkable increase in the number of international marriages and cohabiting partnerships. This figure has undoubtedly grown exponentially over the past three decades. After Europe, Asia’s extraordinary growth rate compared to all other regions is clearly evident. By 2024, Europe represented 62% of all marriages involving Finns in multicultural couples, most commonly with partners from countries such as Sweden, the United Kingdom, Germany, Estonia, France, and Italy, among others. Asia followed with 20%, with Thailand, the Philippines, China, and Vietnam standing out in particular. Notes: * Intercultural families as a term refers to families in which at least one family member has a different cultural background. In the case of all the data presented here, intercultural families are defined as families where the parents were born in different countries. ** Europe does not include the figures for Finland. *** Families refers where the married or cohabiting person was born in Finland or the other spouse in a same-sex marriage or cohabiting couple or registered partnership was born in Finland.
